KEY STAGE 1

THE GRAMMAR OF SAFETY SIGNS – TEACHER NOTES

Key Stage 1
Age 5-7 year olds

Underlying Teaching Philosophy

When a child enters Key Stage 1 they are starting to experience more independence.

Children at this age are starting to question and often want to work things out for themselves.

It is important at this stage to challenge a child’s mind by combining exploration with creativity.

Key Stage 1 is about developing and creating a base knowledge which will become a vital tool in later life.

At 5, 6, and 7 years old children will start to experience independence and will not be quite so reliant on those key people identified in the Foundation Module. Children are natural explorers, they will question the level of acceptance but they still will identify key people in their lives as those who keep them safe. However, this module of the grammar of safety signs has been designed to challenge a child’s mind by combining exploration, questioning with creativity.

The module aims to be complementary to the curriculum,in particular:
Citizenship.

Science.

Maths.

Geography.

Art and Design.

Literacy.

In addition, the module also addresses issues surrounding ‘Every Child Matters’ in the form of assisting a child to have a sense of wellbeing and safety. A child should be able to recognize a dangerous situation and the instruction of how to deal with the situation through the use of safety signage.

Learning Objectives
